Marilyn Manson’s New Album “We are Chaos” Out Today

There is exciting news in the world of metal as Marilyn Manson’s new album, “We are Chaos” releases today. It is the first new music out of the group since their 2017 release “Heaven Upside Down”.

Manson spoke about the album that was “was recorded to its completion without anyone hearing it until it was finished”, discussing its linear concept.

“Just like in a movie or a play, there’s three acts. And we were very particular about how we pieced it all together, but it was not difficult. There were no extra songs that we left off, the singer said.

“There is most definitely a side A and side B in the traditional sense,” he added. “But just like an LP, it is a flat circle and it’s up to the listener to put the last piece of the puzzle into the picture of songs.”

Prior to releasing the album, the band released two of its singles. The first “We are Chaos” is titled for the album. It starts out with a somewhat sinister build up that leads into a catchy chorus that features the lyrics,

“We are sick, fucked up and complicated
We are chaos, we can't be cured
We are sick, fucked up and complicated
We are chaos, we can't be cured”

The second single, “Don’t Chase the Dead” came out yesterday getting everyone excited about the coming release. This one hits you dead on in the face with a catchy yet dark rhythm. Here is a sample of some of the lyrics.

“Angels in exile
Here lies the dead
An ice cream truck in your inferno

Don't chase the dead
Or they'll end up chasing you
Don't chase the dead
Or they'll end up chasing you

If tonight lasts forever
It won't matter if there's no tomorrow
If tonight lasts forever
It won't matter if there's no tomorrow
No tomorrow”

Clearly, Manson is still integrating a dark theme in his lyrics. Yet, based on the two singles released, he seems to be going in more of a glam/rock/pop direction with a distinct Bowie-esque feel. Though the music is still synthesized and electronic, it doesn’t sound as restrained. He is opening up with anthemic choruses and, yes, I’ll say it, the music seems more upbeat.

The album has been a work in progress for some time. Last April Manson said the album was nearly done and he was hoping to have it out by the end of 2019. He also said he was thinking of self-titling it.

Over a year later, he has a finished product. He announced its completion by commenting on a tweet collaborator Shooter Jennings had posted.

Jennings posted a photo of himself next to a Rolling Stone cover of Manson writing, “Just waiting for this finished masterpiece to be released”. Manson confirmed its completion in the comments writing, “Love My Shooter, Misty and Pancake”. He also referred to the album as a masterpiece and wrote “Shit is gonna get real.”

How real will shit actually get? Take a listen and find out for yourself.
