Taylor Swift Surprise Drops New Album 'Folklore' and Fans Can’t Get Enough

Taylor Swift surprised fans when she announced yesterday that she would be releasing her eighth studio album, Folklore, at midnight. It’s out today and fans are raving.

Swift made her announcement yesterday explaining that so many of her plans for 2020 were delayed due to COVID including many shows that were scheduled in support of her 2019 album ‘Lover’. In her free time, she wrote the Folklore tracks collaborating with Aaron Dessner of the National, Bon Iver, William Bowery and Jack Antonoff.

She posted a statement about the release of the album yesterday on her Twitter page stating, “Tonight at midnight I’ll be releasing my eighth studio album, folklore; an entire brand new album of songs I’ve poured all my whims, dreams, fears and musings into.”

Hours before releasing the album, she released the music video for the track ‘Cardigan’. Swift wrote and directed the clip which she said was “overseen by a medical inspector, everyone wore masks, stayed away from each other and I even did my own hair, makeup and styling.”

In addition to the video, she also released lyric videos for all the songs on the album except one. A track called ‘The Lakes” will not be available for streaming until the physical album is released. Until then, only collector’s editions of the album will be on sale through July 30, 2020 11:59 PM.

Swift describes Folklore as an “entire brand-new album of songs I’ve poured all of my whims, dreams, fears, and musings into.… Before this year, I probably would’ve overthought when to release this music at the ‘perfect time,’ but the times we’re living in keep reminding me that nothing is guaranteed. My gut is telling me that if you make something you love, you should just put it out into the world. That’s the side of uncertainty I can get on board with.”

Dessner also shares some insight on the songwriting process. He admits that when Swift first approached him about the project, he was hesitant because he thought working remotely would drag things out.

“But a few hours after sharing my music, my phone lit up with a voice memo from Taylor of a fully written version of a song — the momentum never really stopped,” Dessner said. “Over the next few months, we remotely finished 11 songs (she also recorded several others with the amazing Jack Antonoff) of her magical new album Folklore. I’ve rarely been so inspired by someone, and it’s still hard to believe this even happened — these songs came together in such a challenging time.”

With the album release just a few hours in, it has already gotten rave reviews. Fans are posting all over social media singing its praises while celebrities like Halsey and Todrick Hall are giving it a thumbs up.

Swift fans will agree the release of the album is a pleasant surprise during a difficult time. Well done Swift!
