Rise Up New York Virtual COVID Benefit Concert Announced Hosted by Tina Fey
As the COVID crisis continues to affect the world and leave devastating effects in its wake, virtual benefit concerts are being hosted all over the world. Many states are spearheading events specifically designed to raise funds for their communities. New York will be joining the ranks as it has recently announced its Rise Up New York telethon event.
An all star line up has been announced for the event which is being sponsored by the poverty fighting nonprofit Robin Hood and iHeart Media as well as other television and radio stations in the New York area. It will be hosted by Tina Fey. Other celebs scheduled to make an appearance include Jimmy Fallon, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Robert DeNiro, Bette Midler, Barbara Streisand, Spike Lee, Jennifer Lopez, Jake Gyllenhaal, Eli Manning and more. There will also be musical performances by Mariah Carey, Billy Joel, Sting and Bon Jovi.
The event is scheduled to take place on May 11 from 7 to 8 PM EST. It will be broadcast nationally on CNBC and it will also be available on local New York television stations as well as New York Spectrum 1 and News 12. It will stream locally iHeart Radio and Entercom radio stations and nationally on Sirius XM.
New York is a state that has been deeply affected by the COVID virus. According to John Hopkins University, the state has been the source of 200,000 of the world’s total 3.5 million cases. 19,000 of those 200,000 cases have been deadly.
Here’s what Robin Hood CEO Wes Moore had to say on the pandemic’s effects on the community. “This crisis has created a whole new set of challenges for the millions of New Yorkers who already struggled to make ends meet. This is a moment where we must all come together and rise up together as a community in support of our neighbors and in support of one another.”
The event will have a telethon style format and the goal is to get all New Yorkers to donate at least $10 to the cause. 100% of the money raised will be going towards food, shelter, mental and physical healthy assistance, legal services, education and the general rebuilding of lives.
